A Thompson man is in custody after RCMP stopped a car with stolen plates being driven erratically by a man throwing cash out of the window.

RCMP at Gypsumville received a report Oct. 14 of an erratic driver in a vehicle heading north on Highway 6 near Provincial Road 513 just before 2:30 a.m., police said in a news release Friday. They located the vehicle approximately 20 kilometres north of PR 513 and tried to stop it, but the driver refused.

The Mounties followed the vehicle, which was travelling at about 110 km/h and weaving into the southbound lane, police said.

During the pursuit, items were thrown out of the driver’s window, hitting the police cruiser, including Canadian currency what appeared to be marijuana. Nearly 100 kilometres north of PR 513, the suspect drove into the ditch, jumped out of the car and ran into the woods, police said.

Grand Rapids and Ashern RCMP, using a police dog, tracked the suspect, leading to the arrest of a 26-year-old man.

Police said they found “a significant amount” of currency spread out on the road, with some stuck to the grille of a cruiser involved in the pursuit.

Abraham Horace Saunders of Thompson is in custody, charged with flight from a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime, driving carelessly, driving while disqualified and failure to comply with a probation order.
