Police have two men in custody following two separate assaults that took place on Winnipeg buses Wednesday.

Just before noon, Winnipeg Transit contacted police about a man threatening a transit supervisor. A passenger, without paying his fare, boarded at the rear door of the bus at the University of Manitoba, police said in a press release. The bus driver asked the man to pay, and the passenger became verbally abusive and took a seat.

A short time later, a transit inspector boarded the bus and tried to talk to the suspect, who allegedly responded with a threat and assaulted the inspector, tearing his uniform in the process, police said. The inspector and the driver were able to restrain the suspect until police arrived and arrested him.

Daniel Caneda, 24, of Winnipeg has been charged with assault, uttering threats and mischief under $5,000.

About 90 minutes later, police were called to the Tuxedo Park Shopping Centre area about a violent man on a bus.

A passenger, who police said was unprovoked, approached a 45-year-old man seated on the bus and choked him to the point of unconsciousness.

A second passenger tried to intervene and was choked and assaulted, police said. Both men were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Joseph James McKay, 43, of Winnipeg has been charged with assault and failing to comply with a probation order.

Caneda and McKay are both in custody.
