Brandon police didn’t have to go far to arrest a suspect believed to have stolen a vehicle on Friday morning – he was already in the courthouse.

The arrest of a 21-year-old the Brandon man came about 30 minutes after a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox was reported stolen from a parking lot on Cornell Bay at 8:25 a.m.

Shortly after the Equinox was reported stolen, police received a report that a parked car was struck in the 1300 block of 10th Street, which they believe involved the stolen vehicle.

Just prior to 9 a.m., sheriff’s officers at the court house called to report this same vehicle had been located at the court building and that the suspect was inside.

On Saturday, Sgt. Kevin Loewen said that it remained unclear as to what the suspect thought he was doing in the court building.

Officers arrested the man on site, who they report having shown signs of impairment as the result of drug consumption.

The suspect was set to appear in court on Saturday, charged with the theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and breaching two release conditions from previous charges.

Impairment charges are pending, as that part of the investigation is ongoing.
