Forensic tests are pending for a white substance sprayed on a teen girl at the St. Vital mall, Winnipeg police say.
Police have interviewed a person of interest in the case after publicly releasing a surveillance-video image of a Caucasian man believed to be in his 50s who allegedly followed a group of girls and “sprayed or otherwise deposited” an unknown substance on one of them. The police service said in a news release Sunday no charges will be laid until the sex crimes unit receives the results of a forensic examination on the unknown substance.
The incident happened around 1:50 p.m. Feb. 19 when the girl was shopping with several friends at the St. Vital Centre shopping mall and an unknown man began closely following the girls.
Police said at some point, the man “sprayed or otherwise deposited” an unknown substance on the clothing of one of the girls.
A Facebook post by a woman who says she is the girl’s mother described it as a “sticky white substance” believed to have been a bodily fluid.
Police said the person of interest has co-operated with investigators and the investigation is ongoing.
