Claim rejected: The Manitoba government has rejected a claim that it owes the owner of the Port of Churchill any money. It has filed a statement of defence in Court of Queen’s Bench fighting a claim that it owes the Hudson Bay Port Co. $1.7 million in subsidies. The company, owned by Omnitrax, said it negotiated the subsidy deal with the previous NDP government. READ MORE

Alternate suspect: Defence lawyers for the man accused of killing teenager Candace Derksen attempted to introduce new evidence Thursday that would point to an alternate suspect. Mark Edward Grant is being tried for murder in the 1985 case. The new evidence involves two letters mailed to a Winnipeg radio station in late 1987. The judge has yet to rule on their admissibility. O’Leary absent: Ten of the 14 declared candidates for the federal Conservative leadership appeared at a forum in Winnipeg last night, but the man on everyone’s mind, Kevin O’Leary, wasn’t one of them. O’Leary, a businessman and TV personality, was absent from the event at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre because the party hasn’t processed his candidacy papers yet. Reliving the pain of 9/11: On Monday, a loved one of Christine Egan, the only Manitoban killed in the 9/11 terror attacks, will trek to Cuba to attend court proceedings at Guantanamo Bay for five men accused of participating in the strikes that destroyed the World Trade Center. “I don’t expect it to be pleasant,” said Ellen Judd, an anthropology professor at the University of Manitoba, who will attend pretrial hearings for the accused masterminds of the attacks. On Jan. 20, 1973: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that four gunmen battled police officers in New York City for hours; on officer was killed and two others wounded, while the gunmen remained holed up in a sporting goods store. Manitoba Liberal leader Izzy Asper said if elected he would stop the entire hydroelectric project that would dam the Churchill River and flood Southern Indian Lake. NDP premier Ed Schreyer said it would be irresponsible to ignore the economic benefits from the hydroelectric project. READ MORE
