Lloyd Schreyer came in as board chairman at Red River College to clean up a huge mess. Now the Pallister government has fired him, along with vice-chair Kathy Knight.

Education Minister Ian Wishart named four new governors to the RRC board Thursday and elevated Loren Cisyk to the head of the board.

New governor Janice Hyde is now vice-chair. Cisyk, Hyde and new governors Susan Gilbert and Debra Enns follow the Tory template for public boards and commissions by being senior managers and business and finance executives.

An aide to Wishart said Schreyer’s and Knight’s departures are officially called a “revocation” by order of provincial cabinet. As well, the terms of Catherine Cook, Ron Koslowsky and Benjamin McDonald have expired.

Schreyer did not respond to an interview request Thursday.

Schreyer was appointed by the former NDP government to clean up the mess of the college’s finances, administration and reputation after RRC bought out president Stephanie Forsyth in late summer of 2014, just short of four years into the job.

The province had investigated her turbulent tenure as president and issued a scathing report, citing dozens of questionable spending decisions and expense claims.

Forsyth had fired 16 senior executives in about a three-year period, including some she’d hired to replace senior administrators she’d previously fired.

Schreyer oversaw the board’s hiring of Paul Vogt as the current president.

However, unlike other boards and commissions which the Tories have totally overhauled, Wishart left six governors in place, including Winnipeg Labour Council president David Sauer and Social Planning Council of Winnipeg president and academic Leah Gazan.

Wishart said previously that he has no intention of completely cleaning house on postsecondary boards.
