Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman says he will not be running in the next municipal election.

Bowman was first elected mayor in 2014 and re-elected in 2018, but says he will not be seeking a third term in the 2022 election.

He is the city’s first Indigenous mayor.

Bowman says in a statement that Manitoba has too many career politicians and he will not be one of them.

He says he is giving two-years notice so Winnipeggers can choose the best person to run the city with the benefit of time.

In his statement, he says political leaders should be more concerned about the needs of the community than they are about winning another election.

Bowman says, for the remainder of his term, he will focus on running the city during the COVID-19 pandemic.
