Pedestrian taken to hospital after Portage Avenue driver hits him with car

A pedestrian was taken to hospital in serious condition overnight Friday when he was hit by a car on the corner of Portage and Memorial avenues, beside the downtown Hudson’s Bay building.

The man was still in hospital Saturday morning, a duty officer with the Winnipeg Police Service said.

At about 12:45 a.m. Saturday, a driver going eastbound down Portage hit the pedestrian, also knocking over a nearby streetlight stanchion. The driver was still at the scene when officers arrived, the duty officer said. He did not say whether charges had been laid or if the driver had been detained.

Overnight, the block was closed both east- and westbound, opening up again early Saturday morning.
