THE Winnipeg Art Gallery had a surreal weekend, attendance-wise.
The gallery set an opening weekend attendance record for its two new Salvador Dalí-themed exhibitions, Dalí Up Close and the Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
More than 4,000 people visited the gallery in the first 24 hours last Saturday night and Sunday to check out over 125 paintings, sculptures, photographs and jewelry.
A free admission opportunity that was offered by the Nuit Blanche art celebration had art lovers lined up all around the building Saturday night to get a glimpse of the paintings, including the Beaverbrook exhibit’s show-stopper, Dalí’s Santiago El Grande.
“It was also rewarding to see such an amazing cross-section of the city at the WAG — people from every community, and every age and background, making the most of their art gallery,” said WAG director and CEO Stephen Borys.
The two exhibitions run until Jan. 25. New members who sign up during the exhibitions get free admission for their first visit to Dalí Up Close and Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
