Five EPPY nominations for Free Press

The Winnipeg Free Press has secured nominations in five categories for the 2018 Editor & Publisher Awards in journalistic excellence.

The Free Press was the only Canadian news organization to be recognized, and in two of the categories, the paper was the only one nominated.

“Our newsroom takes great pride that the journalism we are doing has not only grabbed five nominations but is the only Canadian content being lauded along with the likes of the Boston Globe, CNN and NBC,” editor Paul Samyn said.

The nominations included best daily newspaper website with under one million unique monthly visitors, and best sports video in the same category. The video — titled Party on, Winnipeg — was produced by photojournalist Mikaela MacKenzie and focused on the city’s pride after the Winnipeg Jets eliminated the Nashville Predators in NHL playoff action.

The other nominations were:

• Best news of event feature (under one million unique monthly visitors): I thought it was… a nightmare, reporter Randy Turner’s account of a local hockey player who survived the Humboldt bus crash tragedy),

• Best digital magazine (under one million unique monthly visitors): for Above the Fold, the Free Press evening online edition, and

• Best innovation project (under one million unique monthly visitors): for Food for Thought.

Food for Thought was a 24-hour menu that involved round-the-clock coverage as a team of journalists examined how food brings people together — around kitchen tables, late-night hang-outs, crack-of-dawn bakeries, park picnics, truck stops, and street parties over one full summer day and night in Winnipeg.

Now in its 23rd year, the international EPPY competition honours the best digital-media websites.
