A Winnipeg Free Press photographer and a former photo intern have been named as finalists in the National Pictures of the Year awards.
Mikaela MacKenzie has been nominated in the portrait/personality category for a photo she took of Crystal Rondeau who, when she was a child, was admitted to Children’s Hospital more than 300 times and credits the hospital’s Good Day Show for keeping her spirits up at the time.
MacKenzie has also been nominated twice in the single multimedia category.
Sisterly Love is a video about the Sisters of the Holy Rock singing group.
MacKenzie’s other nominated video, One Dog at a Time, is a video about the dangerous number of stray dogs at northern reserves including the Chemawawin Cree Nation.
Andrew Ryan, who worked last summer as a Free Press intern, was nominated under the feature photo category for a picture he shot of a couple taking a nap at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.
The winners will be announced during a gala held by the News Photographers Association of Canada at the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver on April 13.
