A man who was charged with a road rage incident outside the Centennial Concert Hall last month now faces additional charges of crack cocaine possession after he was pulled over for driving a vehicle with a dirty licence plate.

Winnipeg police said its officers were in the area of Watt Street and Sydney Avenue when they spotted a licence plate on a vehicle so dirty they couldn’t make out the letters and numbers last Friday at about 1:20 p.m.

When the officers tried to pull over the sedan, the driver attempted to get away, but police were able to stop the vehicle at Chalmers Avenue and Watt Street.

Police arrested the lone occupant of the vehicle and search found sixteen 1/4-gram rocks of crack cocaine, two mobile phones, $225 in cash, and a mini-combination safe.

When police later executed a search warrant of the safe they found 120 1/4-gram rocks of crack cocaine inside.

Justin Peter Karpluk, 20, of Winnipeg, has been charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and failure to comply with a judge’s bail conditions and a probation order.

Karpluk is in custody.

Earlier this month, Karpluk was charged with aggravated assault in connection with what police called a “road rage” assault on a 63-year-old man outside the concert hall on Jan. 7.

The victim, who had just seen a production of The Sound of Music, was getting into a vehicle stopped on Market Avenue when a man jumped out of a Mercedes Benz, which had been trying to merge into traffic, and punched him in the upper body.

The suspect fled and the victim was taken to hospital in stable condition and was released. Police said earlier this month, when announcing the suspect had turned himself in to officers on Feb. 5, that the victim is waiting for surgery.
