Police believe a Manitoba Warriors drug trafficking network has been smashed after the RCMP raided two homes in Grand Rapids, arrested six people and seized cocaine.
RCMP said on Tuesday that the arrests come after a months-long investigation by the force’s Manitoba Integrated Gang Intelligence Unit, which observed drugs from Winnipeg going to the Grand Rapids area.
“Illegal drugs are insidious and fund many different types of crime,” RCMP Sgt. Paul Manaigre said in a statement Tuesday.
“Our officers and intelligence experts worked tirelessly on this investigation for many months in order to take not only drugs and guns, but gang members, off the street. The RCMP has seen the destruction caused by the trafficking of illicit drugs and we will continue to enforce the laws against this to their fullest extent.”
RCMP said as part of the investigation, which began last September, officers arrested a member of the Manitoba Warriors and a driver as they were driving to Grand Rapids on Hwy. 6 on Nov. 12. Police seized a 567-gram package of cocaine and a Manitoba Warriors vest.
RCMP said they continued to investigate and were able to tie the drug shipment to four other people who were arrested last Wednesday — two in Grand Rapids, one in Winnipeg, and a fourth at Headingley Correctional Centre.
During the searches, a rifle, shotgun and collapsible baton were found.
Harvey Cook Jr., 29 of Grand Rapids, a full-patch member of the Manitoba Warriors, has been charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine. His parents, Harvey James Cook, 56, and Madeline Cook, 59, both of Grand Rapids, have been charged with possessing the proceeds of crime.
Jesse Richard Thomas, 33, of Winnipeg, an associate of the Manitoba Warriors, has been charged with conspiracy to traffic cocaine, Bobby Raymond Hudson, 26, of Grand Rapids, a member of the gang, has been charged with drug offences including possession of cocaine with the purpose of trafficking, and Terry Andrew Smith, 27, of Grand Rapids, has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine and conspiracy to traffic cocaine.
Cook Jr., Thomas, and Hudson are in custody; the other three have been released.
The investigation is continuing.
