Seven men were arrested, five vehicles were seized and seven at-risk youth were taken to a place of safety during a weekend project by Winnipeg police aimed at protecting youth at high risk of being sexually exploited.
Project Return, made up of the police service’s Counter Exploitation Unit, Missing Person’s Unit, and East District Community Support Workers, as well as outreach workers from agencies including Resources Assistance for Youth (RAY) and the Bear Clan Patrol, went last weekend to 80 locations where high-risk missing youth are known to go.
Police said on Tuesday that seven men between the ages of 40 to 60 were arrested for purchasing sexual services and five vehicles were seized. As well, 72 contacts were made to help people involved in the sex trade while 42 were given harm reduction kits, food and clothing.
Police said two of the youths were arrested for outstanding warrants and failing to comply with a sentence.
“Our commitment to issues surrounding our missing youth and those at risk of sexual exploitation in the community will continue,” police said in a statement.
