The American Association’s Winnipeg Goldeyes will retire the uniform No. 22 of former manager Hal Lanier during the 2018 season.

The retirement ceremony will take place on July 12 before the Goldeyes take on the Sioux Falls Canaries at Shaw Park. Earlier that day, Lanier will be the club’s special guest at the Goldeyes’ 25th anniversary luncheon.

No. 22 has not been worn by any member of the Goldeyes since Lanier’s final year managing the club in 2005. It will be the fifth jersey number retired in franchise history, which also include the No. 5 (second baseman Brian Duva, retired in 2001), No. 6 (shortstop Max Poulin, 2011), No. 21 (pitcher Donnie Smith, 2009) and No. 31 (pitcher Ace Walker, 2015).

Hal Lanier managed the Goldeyes for 10 seasons from 1996-2005, compiling an overall record of 523-361 (.592 winning percentage) (Mikaela MacKenzie / Winnipeg Free Press files)

Lanier managed the Goldeyes for 10 seasons from 1996-2005, compiling an overall record of 523-361 (.592 winning percentage). The Denton, N.C., native led the Goldeyes to nine winning seasons, eight playoff berths and five trips to the Northern League Championship Series.

“Hal Lanier brought class and integrity to the Northern League,” Goldeyes owner-president Sam Katz said in a release by the team. “The league originally told us we would never be able to land someone with Hal’s resume. Luckily, we didn’t listen to them, because Hal is one of the best things to have ever happened to the Goldeyes, and we are fortunate to have had someone of his stature leading our club.”

The Winnipeg Goldeyes open the 2018 season on May 18 on the road against the Cleburne Railroaders. The club’s home opener is slated for May 25 when they host the Sioux Falls Canaries.
