Lacing up: Perhaps it’s time to dust off the skates and enjoy the outdoor ice that’s opening around the city. The duck pond surface at Assiniboine Park opened on Wednesday for skating, and surfaces at the Forks opened last weekend, although the river trail is still not safely frozen.

Local DJ goes national: Odario Williams, the new host of CBC Radio 2’s evening show, Afterdark, is also the frontman of hip-hop group Grand Analog and Winnipeggers may remember the MC from his time in local hip-hop duo Mood Ruff. He was also a volunteer DJ at the U of W’s campus/community station, CKUW 95.9 FM. “Those were some of the best times of my life,” he told Jill Wilson. READ MORE

Uncertainty reigned over whether Finance minister John Crosbie’s higher gasoline tax would still come into effect. The Manitoba government acknowledged the ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada which found both the Manitoba Official Language Act and Quebec’s French Language Charter were unconstitutional.
