City of Winnipeg Coun. Russ Wyatt announced Thursday that he has entered rehab for alcoholism and drug abuse.

‘I couldn’t go on’: In an exclusive statement to the Free Press, Coun. Russ Wyatt said he’s on leave from city council so he can get treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. Wyatt, who is at the Aurora Recovery Centre near Gimli, said he has yet to make up his mind about whether he’ll seek reelection. Ryan Thorpe reports. READ MORE

State of the city: Mayor Brian Bowman will deliver his last state of the city speech before this fall’s election at the convention centre during the noon hour. Yesterday, Bowman said he will be seeking reelection. READ MORE

Senators seek input: Senators will hear from Indigenous elders, youth and community members in a public meeting at the Neeginan Centre this morning. The committee is on a fact-finding mission for a report on how best to forge a new relationship with Indigenous peoples. A second meeting on the implications of the legalization of marijuana for Indigenous communities starts this afternoon.

Car crashes into fire hall: A car crashed into a fire-paramedic station on Marion Street early this morning. The car went through one of the station’s bay doors and came to a stop on its side. No firefighters were hurt.

Cost of cannabis: Documents tabled Monday in the House of Commons show Ottawa will spend an average of $46.4 million annually until 2022 for public servants to regulate cannabis on a full-time basis.
