A 17-year-old teenage boy and two 14-year-old girls face murder and attempted murder charges in a stabbing attack that killed one man and left his brother fighting for his life.

“This particular homicide is tragic on so many levels. The victims were both young adults and the accused were youth. You have families affected, futures affected,” Winnipeg Police spokeswoman Const. Tammy Skrabek said Thursday.

Both victims suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack, which occurred in a field adjacent to a North End school Wednesday around 2:35 a.m.

Police identified the man who died as Jordan Thomas, 18 of Winnipeg.

They also confirmed the second victim as Thomas’s brother.

He remained in critical condition Thursday. The only information police released about him is that he is under the age of 20.

Police initially responded to the incident in the field at David Livingstone School in the 200 block of Flora Avenue early Wednesday morning.

When they arrived, they found the two brothers, one unconscious and the other not breathing, police said.

Officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived and both were sent to hospital. Thomas was pronounced dead a short time later.

The crime scene covered a wide area, including the field adjacent to the school and a nearby house. At least 20 cruiser cars contained the scene and blocked it off for the preliminary investigation.

The school opened for the day, but students were kept away from the crime scene.

Debris and clothing littered the middle of the field next to what appeared to be blood in the snow.

Police said at the time they believed the assault mostly likely started in the field, then moved to the residence.

In the hours after the attack, police took a number of people into custody but didn’t indicate then if any of them were suspects or witnesses.

In the update Thursday, police reported three arrests.

The boy, 17, and the two girls, 14, were charged with second degree murder and attempted murder. All three remained in custody Thursday.
