RCMP have charged three men in connection with the recent death of a 42-year-old inmate at Stony Mountain Institution.

Max Maurice Richard, who was serving a life sentence for the slaying of a woman who refused to have sex with him, was killed when a large fight broke out in the prison Jan. 7 around 9 p.m., according to RCMP.

Victor Travis Ross, 29, Michael Frank Okemow, 29, and Wilfred George Cook, 27, have each been charged with second-degree murder, the RCMP said Friday in a news release.

The investigation also led police to charge Anthony Michael Mitchell, 25, James Frederick Sinclair, 20, and Michael Roulette, 22, with attempted murder for an assault on another inmate.

Stephen Lee Donovan Houle, 26, has also been charged with assault with a weapon.

Richard was twice convicted of second-degree murder in the August 2011 death of 24-year-old April Hornbrook in Winnipeg. He had been serving his sentence since January 2017.
