The 15th annual Gimli Film Festival claimed a record indoor attendance of 3,853 during the event’s five-day run, which wrapped up Sunday.
The five beach screenings, which included Jurassic Park and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, drew an estimated 5,000 moviegoers to the RBC Sunset Screenings, with rainouts cancelling two of the shows, including Sunday night’s interrupted viewing of Dr. Strangelove.
Also on Sunday night, the festival bestowed a couple of inaugural prizes, including the Alda Award, donated by Senator Janis Johnson, which marks excellence in circumpolar filmmaking. It was handed out to director Sturla Gunnarson, director of the documentary Monsoon.
The Jack Clements Livin’ the Dream” Lifetime Achievement Award was given on Saturday to producer Michael Scott in recognition of “having mentored a generation of exceptional filmmakers who went on to create a thriving Manitoba film community.”
