There was a slight uptick in Manitoba’s unemployment rate last month, even though 2,700 more workers found jobs, new Statistics Canada data show.
The agency said the province’s jobless rate rose to 5.7 per cent from 5.6 per cent in July because of an influx of 3,600 new workers into the provincial labour force. With the economy generating only 2,700 new jobs during the month, that left 900 of them unemployed, causing the slight bump in the unemployment rate.
But even with the increase, Manitoba still had the second-lowest jobless rate in the country after Saskatchewan’s 4.7 per cent.
Statistics Canada said the 2,700 new jobs created in August included 1,900 new full-time positions and 800 new part-time ones. The new additions were among a total of 8,600 new jobs added to the provincial economy since August of last year.
