Elections Manitoba has fired an enumerator after discovering he is a sex offender.

In an email, Elections Manitoba spokeswoman Alison Mitchell said a female member of the public reported the enumerator to the agency.

Elections Manitoba investigated and fired the enumerator, who was hired Feb. 3 as a temporary worker.

Mitchell said all election records have been recovered.

Under Elections Manitoba rules, all workers must sign “an oath stating that they are legally qualified to act in the capacity for which they have been hired,” Mitchell said.

The fired enumerator had signed an oath, she added.

While it is not required for enumerators to undergo a criminal record, Elections Manitoba is reviewing its “practices to see if any further measures might be taken in the future,” Mitchell said.

She said the other electoral jurisdictions Elections Manitoba has consulted have similar practices regarding criminal record policies.
