The unit that investigates police in Manitoba is asking for witnesses with information or video footage of a Winnipeg traffic stop.

The province’s Independent Investigations Unit is trying to determine if Winnipeg police officers used excessive force during the arrest of a driver that followed a routine traffic stop and subsequent foot chase.

According to a statement from the unit, the driver said he was injured in a struggle with police. The incident took place at about 2 p.m. on Nov. 22, in the area of McGregor Street and Magnus Avenue.

“According to police, officers initiated a traffic stop. An individual fled, resulting in a short foot chase. After a struggle, the suspect was eventually placed in handcuffs and transported to a police station where he complained of dizziness and pain in his head,” the investigation unit in the statement. “He was taken to hopsital where he was treated and released back into police custody.”

The statement added there were no serious injuries and that police notified the unit of the incident Dec. 1. The unit’s civilian director determined it was in the public interest to investigate the complaint.

Witnesses or individuals with information or video footage can contact the investigations unit at 1-800-667-6060.
