THE City of Winnipeg is temporarily closing a large portion of the Assiniboine Forest after numerous reports of dangerous coyote activity.

“We have been made aware of at least three instances in the last week wherein visitors to the trail encountered coyotes that appeared not to fear humans, were not scared off by normal means, and stalked hikers and displayed other uncharacteristic behaviours,” said a spokesperson for the city.

The city said reports described the coyotes as displaying predatory and stalking behaviour. The closure will affect the area between Corydon Avenue and Grant Avenue, from Chalfont Road to the west border of the Tuxedo Golf Club.

“We ask people to avoid the posted area for the time being, and advise residents and visitors in the surrounding area to be aware of their surroundings while outdoors and to not leave small children or pets unattended,” said the city’s spokesperson.

The city talked with the province prior to making the decision, and the closure will be in place indefinitely under orders by Manitoba Conservation.
