Peyton Krebs had a bittersweet return to the Western Hockey League Saturday night.

The 18-year-old centre was reassigned by the Vegas Golden Knights to the Winnipeg Ice a day earlier but was required to sit out Saturday’s road game against the Everett Silvertips, his punishment for a checking-from-behind major and game misconduct assessed March 19 in his final regular-season game of the 2018-19 season.

Despite the one-game suspension, Winnipeg’s captain was able to console himself with the news he was the recipient of a three-year entry-level NHL contract from the Knights.

Further terms of the deal were not immediately announced.

Krebs has not seen game action since suiting up for Canada against the U.S. in the bronze-medal game at the world under-18 championship on April 28. Six weeks later he was sidelined by a partially torn Achilles tendon in his left foot, the result of an errant skate blade during an off-season workout.

He has been rehabbing the injury ever since, and was only recently cleared to resume playing.

Vegas was apparently undeterred by the injury and selected the Okotoks, Alta., product in the first round (17th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft.
