The man killed in the 100-block of Colony Street last Monday was from a small, remote reserve in northwestern Ontario.

David Mosquito, 40, came from Bearskin Lake First Nation, north of Sioux Lookout, the band secretary confirmed. He had lived in Winnipeg for awhile, she said.

Mosquito is survived by a lone parent, his father. Bearskin is a fly-in reserve of about 400 people, she said.

Four people face manslaughter charges after the assault and death of Mosquito.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment block in the 100-block of Colony Street to check the well-being of the man around 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Police found the victim with serious injuries to his upper body. Paramedics took him to hospital where he died.

Officers, along with the canine unit, found and arrested four suspects shortly after, near Canora Street and Picardy Avenue in Wolseley.

Winnipeg police Const. Rob Carver said everyone involved knew each other and the group was together before the assault.

“It looks like the assault began some time before and continued over a period of time, ending when our members and Winnipeg police, fire and paramedics were called yesterday around noon,” Carver said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Carver did not say how the man died, whether a weapon was used or whether drugs or alcohol were involved. Police aren’t identifying the victim at this time.

Silvia Noreen McKay, 39, Kirby James Crow, 28, Rachel Lynn Little, 32, and Dennis Ashley Baptiste, 30, have all been charged with manslaughter and remain in custody.
