Bomb blast: Fifteen people were injured after a bomb was set off in an Indian restaurant in Mississauga, Ont., last night. Three were critically injured but have since been upgraded to stable condition. Police are searching for two male suspects, who had their faces covered.

Forest fires: It was expected the last of 1,400 people being evacuated from two remote Manitoba reserves because of forest fires would arrive in Winnipeg last night. Little Grand Rapids Chief Ray Keeper said the rescues would have started earlier if not for communication problems. Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler suggested band officials may have had their cellphones turned off or had neglected to charge them. Dylan Robertson reports.

Abortion vote: Voters in Ireland are casting ballots in a referendum that would open the door to loosening the country’s strict abortion ban. If the public votes to repeal a constitutional amendment, the government proposes abortion be allowed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and, in some cases, later.

Scheduling sentencing: A judge is scheduled to set a date for sentencing Guido Amsel, who was convicted of multiple counts of attempted murder and other offences for sending mail bombs to his ex-wife and local lawyers. Provincial court Judge Tracey Lord ruled Amsel was behind four explosions, including three in 2015.

On May 25, 1953: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that 20 people were injured in car accidents over the weekend. The new official Welsh word for television was “teledu” which in English meant “stinking badger” and referred to an animal also known as the “Javanese skunk.” In Manitoba, a near-record 165 candidates were in the field for the upcoming provincial election. The Free Press would publish the musings of the Duke of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII, on the upcoming coronation of his niece as Queen Elizabeth II. READ MORE
