Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz no longer lists his Arizona home as a primary residence.

Since 2013, Katz’s home in the Windgate Ranch neighbourhood of Scottsdale, a Phoenix suburb, has been listed as a primary residence. The status allowed Winnipeg’s mayor to claim an annual US$600 tax credit as an Arizona resident.

Katz’s actual primary home is in Winnipeg’s Tuxedo neighbourhood. The mayor said through a spokeswoman that a U.S. titles office provided incorrect information. Officials at the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office said the mayor did not respond to a form sent to his Scottsdale address.

On Thursday, Katz notified the assessor his Scottsdale house is in fact a second home, said Robert Pizorno, spokesman for the Maricopa County Assessor’s Office.

“Sam Katz has returned the required form indicating his Scottsdale address is not his primary residence. Our records will be updated shortly to reflect this,” Pizorno said via email. “It will be classified as a Class 4 property – second home. Class 4 is a catch-all that also includes rental properties and the like.”

It will be up to the Maricopa County treasurer to decide whether to seek repayment of tax credits totaling US$1,200.
