Three members of the Winnipeg Free Press photo department have been singled out nationally for their visual work in 2014.
Ruth Bonneville, Joe Bryksa and Melissa Tait have been nominated in three separate categories by the 2014 National Pictures of the Year selection committee, the News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) announced Friday.
“It’s great to be recognized by this highly-regarded association for the excellence we strive for every day,” said Free Press director of photography and multimedia Mike Aporius. “Our province holds some of the most talented photojournalists in the country.”
Bonneville is nominated in the social issues category for her photo (“Coffin Hug”) that depicted a pallbearer hugging the casket of Tina Fontaine at her funeral in Sagkeeng First Nation.
Bryska is nominated in the pictorial category for his “Winter Beauty” image, which captures blowing snow and clearing skies near Highway 1.
Tait is nominated in the single multimedia category for her video profile of 104-year-old swimmer Jaring Timmerman.
Brandon Sun photographer Tim Smith is nominated for three awards, including photojournalist of the year. His images capturing the emotional condition of patient Cheryl Mauthe through her cancer treatment were nominated in the social issues and picture story categories.
Winners will be announced during the eight annual NPAC’s National Pictures of the Year gala, which take place on May 9 in Vancouver.
More than 2,000 images from across the country were entered in the NPAC photo competition this year. Images were submitted and judged in 14 different categories, including Canadian photojournalist of the year and Canadian photograph of the year.
