Christmas Cheer Board executive director Kai Madsen has a challenge for you: grab a few friends and a car with some extra room and deliver as many hampers as you can.
“I think they could easily do 25 in a day,” Madsen said.
Things have been going well in the countdown to Christmas, he said, but this weekend is where it starts getting down to crunch time. Madsen estimated the board needs at least 1,000 drivers over the next week to stay on schedule. But even for rookie delivery drivers, the formula for efficiency is simple: two or three people and a vehicle.
“What you need is somebody to stay with the vehicle, because in many cases, there’s no place to park,” Madsen said. “Then the other two people can carry the box and the turkey and the gifts into the house they’re delivering to.”
While some people will deliver dozens of hampers in a day, every little bit counts, said Madsen.
“Whatever they’re comfortable with,” he said. “We have people that come in and do 25, 50, sometimes 100 hampers. But if somebody wants to do four, that’s perfectly OK. We love it.”
There’s also one other thing that really helps the charity get everything done in time.
“Of course, we’re still in need of money,” Madsen said.
That’s where the Free Press Miracle on Mountain campaign comes in, he said.
The Free Press has been collecting donations through the campaign on behalf of the Cheer Board for years — and this time around, there’s a new addition.
On Sunday, at 2 p.m., Free Press writers and Bury the Lede podcast hosts Jen Zoratti and Erin Lebar will record an episode of their show live to raise money for the Miracle on Mountain campaign. The family-friendly West End Cultural Centre event will also feature local talent, including Sandy Taronno (Quinzy), Rusty Matyas (Imaginary Cities), Mise en Scene, HUNKS and Bunny.
Tickets are $20, with all proceeds going to support Miracle on Mountain.
The Free Press is also still collecting donations to the campaign, either by mail or on the Christmas Cheer Board’s website.
“I just encourage people to make sure that they come down to the warehouse,” Madsen said. “And don’t forget to send your cheque on to the Free Press.”
