Police investigate man found dead on Main Street

Winnipeg police have released few details about an overnight incident in which a man died and a section of Main Street was stained with blood.

Police officers were sent to Main Street between Higgins and Sutherland avenues around midnight Wednesday.

They found an injured man; he was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have provided no further details and the investigation is ongoing.

While signs point to a fatal pedestrian-motor vehicle collision, police had yet to confirm whether that was the case.

“We are currently investigating what may be a traffic-related incident,” Const. Tammy Skrabek said.

On Wednesday morning, investigators canvassed the area. Northbound Main Street was closed to traffic for much of the day.

Blood stained the roadway next to a discarded shoe, plastic bags and what appeared to be DVD cases. The sidewalk was cordoned off with crime scene tape, and more than a dozen evidence markers were scattered across the area.

Police said no one had been taken into custody. Police are expected to release additional information Thursday.

It is not the first time a man has died on that stretch of Main Street.

On Oct. 10, 2017, Cody Severight, 23, was hit by a vehicle while crossing Main near Sutherland Avenue.

Justin Holz, an off-duty WPS officer, was later charged with several offences, including impaired driving causing death, failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident, dangerous driving causing death, and driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.

This year has been a deadly one for pedestrians on Winnipeg’s streets.

An MPI spokesman recently told the Free Press nine pedestrians have been killed in traffic collisions in Winnipeg in 2019 — a significant increase over the average annual total.
