Good morning!

Your forecast: A slight blemish has appeared on the August long weekend weather forecast, but it shouldn’t be a major cause for concern. When it comes to the weather in Manitoba, things can change in a hurry — but we remain optimistic the threat of rain on the holiday Monday, Aug. 1 fizzles out well before then. Until then, we’ll sail along with a nice stretch of sunny, warm days, beginning with today’s high of 26 C. On Thursday and Friday, expect plenty of sunshine and highs of 27 C, Saturday will be sunny and 28 C and Sunday will be partly sunny and a blistering 30 C. There’s a 30 per cent chance of showers on a very hot holiday Monday.

Port of Churchill

Churchill open… for discussion?: Speculation is building that the Port of Churchill’s closure is a negotiating ploy on the part of owner OmniTrax. No bail for mom: A Winnipeg woman accused of kidnapping her two children has been denied bail for the time being. A judge put off a decision on Sandra Giesbrecht, 44, until next month. She’s been in custody since her June 22 arrest on two counts of abduction and one count of fleeing from police. READ MORE

Fire guts Dauphin camp: Dozens of children, staff and volunteers escaped without injury Monday when fire destroyed the main building of the Dauphin Bible Camp. But there was no way firefighters could save the building, which housed kitchen and dining facilities and the camp’s chapel. READ MORE

Supporting Long Plain: Hundreds of residents of Long Plain First Nation are still evacuated, many without homes to return to, after a tornado ripped through the community on July 20. This morning, a press conference has been arranged for Long Plain Chief Dennis Meeches and representatives from the Canadian Red Cross to discuss the response to the devastating storm. It’s at 10 a.m. and the Free Press will be there.

Honouring the fallen: A candlelight service will be held today at Winnipeg’s Brookside Cemetery to honour those who gave their lives during the Korean War that ended with a ceasefire to hostilities on July 27, 1953. It takes place at the Korean Veterans Cairn — in the Field of Honour — starting at 4:30 p.m.
