Two incidents of alleged assault by police officers in Manitoba, one by city police and one by the RCMP, are under investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU).

In a press release, the IIU stated it was notified of both complaints Friday and has opened investigations of both.

The IIU said a man alleged he was assaulted May 17 by a Winnipeg Police Service officer while the man was under arrest in an interview room. The man said he was injured, and after being released from police custody, went to the St. Boniface Hospital for an examination.

While the injuries reported do not meet the definition of “serious injury” as defined by IIU regulation 99/2015, the IIU said it is in the public interest for it to conduct an investigation.

In addition, the IIU is investigating a complaint against an RCMP officer at the Manitou detachment. A woman involved in a motor vehicle collision on April 21 is alleging she was assaulted while being arrested for drunk driving.

She was not seriously injured in the alleged assault, but the IIU stated it “determined it is in the public interest for the IIU to assume control of the investigation.”

The IIU is an independent body which investigates all serious incidents involving police officers on or off duty in Manitoba.
