THE Winnipeg Free Press is a finalist in four categories for international awards honouring the best digital-media websites.

The 22nd annual EPPY awards, handed out by Editor and Publisher, has named the Free Press as a finalist in the Best Daily Newspaper Website category, as well as Best News or Event Feature, for Inuit Heart; Best Photojournalism of a Website, for Northern Stars, part one of the Inuit Heart series; and Best Community Service on a Media-Affiliated Website, for reporter Jane Gerster’s stories on assisted dying.

“The growth area for all newspapers is in digital and that’s why these nominations are so important to the future of the Winnipeg Free Press,” Free Press editor Paul Samyn said Friday.

“I’m delighted that our online efforts are being recognized as among the best on the continent, because it speaks to our commitment to our growing digital audience.”

Inuit Heart was a two-part series written by reporter Randy Turner with photos by John Woods that saw the Free Press investigating the impact the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Inuit Art Centre — which has the world’s largest collection of Inuit art — would have on both Winnipeg and the communities in Nunavut where the artists live.

Other nominees for awards include the Globe and Mail, The Daily Beast, the Boston Globe, the Wall Street Journal, CNN, and NBC News.

The awards will be announced on editorandpublisher.com on Oct. 25 at 12:30 p.m.
