University of Manitoba athletes found success on the track and in the pool Friday.
Bison women’s shot putter Brooke-Lynn Boyd finished first overall in that event on Day 1 of the 2017 Canada West track and field championships in Regina.
Manitoba was fifth in women’s standings and sixth in men’s team standings heading into today’s competition.
Boyd registered a gold-medal throw of 13.40 metres, while Gee-ef Nkwonta was third in men’s long jump with a 6.83m leap. Tayo Babalola raced to third in women’s 300m in a time of 39.85.
The Bison men’s 4x800m relay team placed second with a time of 7:44.35.
The top-two finishers at the conference championships qualify for the 2017 U Sports national track and field meet, March 9-11 in Edmonton.
Meanwhile, U of M rookie swimmer Kelsey Wog was tops in women’s 100m breaststroke Friday at this year’s Canadian university swimming championships in Sherbrooke, Que.
Wog earns her first-ever U Sports championship medal — and still has three events this weekend. The 18-year-old posted a time of one minute, 6.06 seconds, setting a personal best.
