Reopening roads: Army bulldozers plowed through wreckage to reopen roads around Beirut’s demolished port after Tuesday’s explosion, apparently caused by a fire that ignited ammonium nitrate. At least 135 people were killed and more than 5,000 injured. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

On Aug. 6, 1947: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that British prime minister Clement Atlee unveiled a new austerity program for the country, including a $48-million reduction in food imports from the dollar area; Atlee warned the British people they must be prepared to work longer with less material incentives to ensure economic victory. In Canada, grain storage rates went up, as did elevator rates. In Manitoba, the crop outlook was satisfactory, though farmers were nevertheless anxious about the coming harvest.
