The University of Winnipeg said a “cyber incident” caused service outages at the downtown school Monday, leading to classes being cancelled.

The U of W said late Monday afternoon that regular campus internet was not yet working but a temporary network was up and running.

Classes for university and U of W Collegiate high school students will resume Tuesday. Professional, applied and continuing education courses will be conducted online. The university advises those students to check their emails for log-in information.

The university initially described the issue as an internet service outage but said later Monday that the outage was linked to some form of “cyber incident” that was discovered Sunday.

“Upon discovering the incident, the university took immediate steps to secure its network, which included making a variety of services unavailable,” a statement posted on the U of W’s website said. “We are now in the process of restoring the interrupted services, investigating the incident and better understanding its impact.”
