The federal and provincial governments have earmarked a combined $27.5 million in housing supports for survivors of domestic violence.

“The funding benefit is expected to support over 2,600 households during the critical time of vulnerability and need experienced by those fleeing violence,” a joint news release states.

The two levels of government are splitting the costs — an enhancement to the Canada Housing Benefit — equally over five years. Winnipeg MP and federal cabinet minister Dan Vandal, provincial Housing Minister Bernadette Smith and provincial Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine made the announcement at a Tuesday morning news conference in the Manitoba Legislative Building.
