One man is in custody and two other individuals are in hospital in stable condition, police said after an early morning crash that involved multiple vehicles in the West End.
Police issued the statement Saturday afternoon, during an investigation that had blocked Banning Street between Ellice and St. Matthews avenues since the accident jolted the street awake just before 5 a.m.
Police said emergency personnel responded to the area of the 500 block of Banning Street regarding a serious motor vehicle collision at about 4:55 a.m.
“The investigation has revealed that a silver/grey sedan was being driven erratically, which resulted in a serious collision involving multiple parked vehicles. Due to the collision, two occupants sustained injuries and were transported from the scene. Both are in stable condition,” said the police statement .
Police added that there had been a report a man had fled the scene. They located him and took him into custody. Charges were pending Saturday afternoon.
One witness reported two people extracted themselves from an overturned vehicle, identified by police as the silver or grey sedan. That vehicle landed on its roof in the front yard of a homeowner’s property, mere metres from the front steps. The pair tried to walk away, the witness said.
One of them was a woman who appeared pregnant
Both had climbed into an older model blue van, when first responders arrived, stopped them and took the woman away in an ambulance, the witness said.
Exactly how the accident happened is something the police did not disclose.
By mid-morning residents were trying to piece together the events that led to the crash. Police had strung yellow tape to within a metre or two of people’s front steps. Investigators were combing the scene for evidence and broken car parts were strewn along the street and the boulevard. At least five cars showed signs of damage.
Two cars were totalled: the upside down car, a Nissan Altima, and another small sedan several metres away across the street. In between, there was a row of parked cars, fenders smashed from ramming into one another.
