Michael Christiansen, a Winnipeg chef who now works at the Pear Tree restaurant in Burnaby, B.C., is the winner of a national cooking competition aimed at young chefs.

Christiansen, 23, won the 2014 Hawksworth Young Chef Scholarship on Sept. 28 in Vancouver. His winning dish, derived from a mystery box of ingredients, was pan-fried lingcod with salsify puree, chanterelle mushrooms and clam form chorizo.

It earned top marks from a judging panel that included Vancouver chef David Hawksworth, who began a foundation in 2013 that oversees the scholarship competition.
