On April 18, 1947: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that an alleged black market dealing in sugar had been smashed by the RCMP; three Winnipeg men faced eight charges laid by the wartime prices and trade board, and a truck and 1,600 pounds of sugar had been seized. The German island fortress of Heligoland, seen as “Germany’s Gibraltar” was blown to pieces by the British navy.
