Police have charged a city motorist with assault after a road-rage incident in rush hour Thursday in the north end of the city.

The incident took place Thursday just before 5 p.m. on Main Street at the Chief Peguis Trail bridge.

Witnesses told police they saw a man behind the wheel of a vehicle cut off a woman driver while both were headed north on Main Street. The man began slamming on his brakes to slow the woman down. Both were travelling about 80 kilometres an hour, about 10 kilometres over the posted speed limit.

The male driver changed lanes, pulling up next to woman before allowing her to pull ahead, police said. He then pulled in behind her and rammed the rear of her vehicle on the passenger side, forcing her to lose control and swerve to avoid a snow bank.

Other motorists stopped to avoid collisions. They reported the woman spun out of control before pulling up and stopping at the approach to the bridge.

Witnesses reported seeing the male driver stop, get out of his vehicle and head toward the woman. He got into the passenger seat of her vehicle and demanded her identification. When she tried to get out and get away from him, witnesses said he pointed a sharp metal object and lunged in her direction.

At that point, other motorists who had stopped ran to help her and held the male driver until police arrived.

A 29-year-old man was arrested. He has no prior criminal record and was released with a promise to appear in court.

Police said road rage incidents occur often and the lesson to motorists is if somebody is trying to cut you off, back off and avoid the driver — even if that means getting out of traffic and driving down a side street.

“It’s not worth a confrontation. It’s usually a case where somebody has had a bad day and they’re taking it out on somebody else in traffic,” Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Cst. Tammy Skrabek said.
