Police have a 22-year-old man in custody following a car jacking saga that had police chasing a suspect through three separate areas of the city before a canine unit tracked him to an unlocked garage in St. Boniface.

The first call about 9 a.m. Wednesday came from a 20-year-old driver who reported someone had forced him to a stop in the area of Edmonton Street and Broadway and taken the cargo van he was driving.

The driver said the got into the passenger side and indicated he had a knife. The driver quickly got out and called police as the intruder took off with the van.

About half an hour later, police were called about another attempted car jacking, this time in St. Vital in the area of Fermor Avenue and Dunkirk Drive.

In that report, the victim was a 42-year-old man who said a cargo van had cut him off in traffic and the van’s driver tried to get into the new vehicle, ordering the driver to get out. The victim refused to unlock the door. Thwarted, the man returned to the cargo van and took off.

The thief abandoned the van a short time later in St. Boniface in the 100 block of Morier Avenue and got into another vehicle that had been left running. He tried to drive off but got stuck in a snow bank, police said.

The next report police got was about a man who had entered another vehicle in the area and stolen clothing from it. The vehicle’s owner confronted the thief, who indicated he had a gun but returned the stolen clothing and took off on foot.

Finally, dogs with a police K-9 unit tracked a suspect to an unlocked garage in the 100-block of Haig Avenue, where he was found with two jackets and a sweater that had been in the garage.

The arrest was made just before 11 a.m., two hours after the initial report.

“I’ve read the reports and there was no explanation for this behaviour,” said Winnipeg Police Service spokesperson Cst. Tammy Skrabek. “There was no indication that alcohol use or drug use was involved.”

Riley Craig Vermette, 22, of Winnipeg was charged with a number of offences, including driving without a valid licence.
