A Winnipeg taxicab driver plans to launch a new taxi dispatch service in the city, capitalizing on new taxicab licenses issued by the city this year.

Baldev Gill told the Free Press he’ll be the dispatcher for the new company, called Yellow Taxi Dispatch Ltd. The dispatch number will be (204) 582-7777, he said.

Gill said Winnipeg’s incumbent taxi companies charge drivers an initial fee to join their dispatch service.

“We won’t charge them any money to join the dispatch service,” said Gill, and will only charge drivers a per-dispatch fee that has yet to be determined.

“If there’s more vehicles, the dispatch fee will be less, and if there’s less vehicles then the dispatch fee will be a little more,” said Gill.

Gill, added he’s not concerned about competing with Unicity Taxi and Duffy’s Taxi, “because I’m in the cab industry all my life, almost 50 years now.”

“The business is there, so it shouldn’t be hard to compete with them,” he said.

Gill plans to hold a meeting for interested drivers at 1020 Selkirk Ave. on Sunday, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
