In 2007, the most powerful tornado recorded in Canada touched down in Elie, just west of Winnipeg.

Environment Canada said the tornado packed winds of more than 400 km/h — strong enough to qualify as Canada’s first-ever F-5 tornado on the older international Fujita scale.

The twister cut a swath 300 metres wide and 5.5 kilometres through the town. Houses and vehicles were picked up whole and thrown in the air.

Amazingly, no one was seriously injured.
