Three people overdosed on fentanyl Wednesday night in East Kildonan, Winnipeg police say.

Police determined three people knowingly ingested the powerful painkiller around 10:30 p.m. and were taken to hospital after one of them called 911. All of them are expected to recover, police say, but the police force is again warning about the dangers of fentanyl after two people died last month in suspected fentanyl overdoses.

Fentanyl, an opiate that can be up to 100 times more toxic than morphine, was listed as a cause of 29 accidental overdose deaths in Manitoba from 2009 to 2014, and as a contributing factor in six deaths, according to the medical examiner’s office.
