RCMP are asking Thompson residents to avoid walking alone in the early morning after two people were attacked with a machete in separate incidents Saturday.

A 33-year-old man went to hospital with a stab wound at about 12:30 a.m.

The man had been walking in the Brandon Crescent area when he was approached by three or four young males who asked him for a cigarette. He was assaulted and injured by what is believed to be a machete.

Mounties were patrolling in the area of Brandon Crescent and Queen’s Bay when an injured woman flagged them down at 2:05 a.m. The 33-year-old woman was walking home when she was attacked in the same way as the earlier victim.

The victims, both Thompson residents, were treated and released from hospital.

“These attacks appear to be random and aimed at vulnerable people walking alone at night,” Staff Sgt. Dave Michaud said in a news release.

“We are asking everyone to be extra vigilant when out and about at night and to avoid walking alone in the early morning hours, if possible.”

The RCMP is increasing patrols in the area.

Police are asking anyone with information on the attacks to contact Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or manitobacrimestoppers.com.
