Man charged after Portage la Prairie senior assaulted

A man has been arrested for assaulting an elderly man he was hired to do home renovations for.

Portage la Prairie RCMP were sent to an assault in progress at a home on Burns Bay at about 8:10 p.m. Tuesday and found a suspect jumping on the roof of a vehicle.

The victim, a 76-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries before being transferred to one in Winnipeg, where he remained Thursday afternoon.

Mounties said the suspect, who was known to the victim, was hired to do some renovations at the victim’s home. The suspect allegedly damaged property at the residence.

A 35-year-old man has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and two counts of mischief. He remains in custody.
