A second woman has been charged in connection with a “plethora” of break-ins in the south Pembina Highway area.

More than $15,000 worth of property was stolen in the break-ins between October and February. The Winnipeg Police Service previously said a 23-year-old woman was arrested at a home on Newdale Avenue on Feb. 15, charged with 69 break-and-enter and theft-related offences and detained in custody.

An apartment complex on Dalhousie Drive with more than 100 mailboxes was broken into more than a dozen times between October and January. Mail containing credit cards and cheques was stolen and used to make purchases. The total repairs cost about $80,000, the WPS said in late February.

Garages and vehicles were broken into, and thieves made off with tools, clothing and cash. Eight of the vehicles were recovered.

Police continued to investigate and, with the help of tips from the public and security video, identified another suspect in the break-ins and additional crimes.

One of the other break-ins was to a parked vehicle outside a restaurant in the 2500 block of Pembina Highway on Feb. 16, the day after the first suspect was arrested. A window of the vehicle was smashed out, and a laptop and cash were stolen.

Police obtained a search warrant for the second suspect’s home in the Fort Richmond area and arrested her Tuesday. Officers seized two laptops — the one stolen on Feb. 16 and another stolen in March 2019 — along with hundreds of “stolen identity documents and financial securities” and an air-powered rifle.

A 38-year-old woman has been charged with 16 break-and-enter and theft-related offences. A 40-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with three weapons offences and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. Both were detained in custody.

Police continue to investigate, with the help of the WPS financial crimes unit.

The WPS is again encouraging the public to record serial numbers for personal items such as vehicles/trailers, leisure sports items, power tools and bicycles.

“Making a police report with such serial numbers can increase the chance that this property will be returned to the rightful owner if recovered,” a news release said.
