The province has issued a flood warning for the Assiniboine River between the Shellmouth Dam near the Saskatchewan border and the City of Brandon.

The provincial infrastructure department’s flood forecast centre said the recent fast snowmelt is causing high flows in rivers and tributaries.

The rising water levels could impact low-lying areas, said the province. The river is expected to recede to its banks by the third week of April. Outflow from the dam is expected to increase as a lot of water is coming from Saskatchewan.

Flood forecasters are also monitoring a precipitation system that is expected to bring up to 40 millimetres of rain and snow into much of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the United States’s portion of the Red River basin next week.

As the melt continues, the province said river flows and levels are expected to fluctuate in the coming days.
